Strong Customer Authentication(SCA) presents additional security for online transactions. While Customer buying online, they need to share the information which confirms their identity. The main purpose of SCA is to overcome online fraud by asking consumers to confirm with secure credentials when their payment methods are being used - in impact confirming their identity as part of their purchase.
3D Secure service facilitated by MasterCard and VISA that allows you to transact online securely using your credit or debit card. 3D Secure service is available only on its 3D Secure merchant sites. Verified by MasterCard Secure Code (MSC) / Visa (VBV) use password protection throughout an Internet purchase to authenticate the customer as an added fraud prevention measure.
Customer Journey via 3DS Authentication is as follow
- The Consumer submits payment information.
- Merchant requests for authentication or SCA exemption.
- The issuer decides whether to challenge the consumer via 3DS verification or use risk-based authentication..
- The issuer provides the outcome to the merchant on whether the transaction is: a) Abandoned. – Terminate transaction. b) Authenticated – Provides credentials for passing the authorization message.
